Rube Goldberg Experiment

Introduction:

As part of our Advanced Science class, we had to come up with our own Rube Goldberg machine. This machine had to be at least 30 seconds long, with at least 10 transfers of energy, and could not exceed the dimensions of 80cm x 80cm x 80cm.

Process:

First we had to research about Rube Goldberg and what exactly the machines did. After looking at some examples, we then had to draw a sketch of what we thought we wanted our machine to look like. After we had our rough draft of our machine, we had to draw our final copy of our machine. After doing so, the fun began; building our machine .

Steps:

1) Marble rolls down ramps.
2) Marble goes through funnel, hitting lever.
3) Lever swings down, opening trap door to release the second marble.
4) Marble goes through tubing, hitting the car.
5) Car goes down ramp hitting the second lever.
6) The second lever hits another marble at the top.
7) Marble goes through tube, falling through tube.
8) Marble goes down the ramp, hitting the domino.
9) Domino falls and hits the golf ball.
10) Golf ball falls off ledge and lands on the calculator, turning it on.

Analysis:

While doing this project, I did learn a few things. The first thing I learned is that this is not as easy as it seems. We all thought at the start of this project that it was going to be really easy, but in the end we were wrong. I also learned that this type of project takes more time than I initially thought. I had to make a lot of adjustments along the way. It was hard to get everything to go the same way every time. Using a stronger base helped a lot more than my first base. I had to really secure things down so that they would not move or be different every time, and I learned the best way to do that was with hot glue. Tape didn't hold things down very well. Another thing I learned is what we thought was a transfer of energy most of the time weren't. With that, I had to keep adding steps to try and reach the 10 energy transfer goal.
